Christmas in Belize

We took a quick trip to Belize, just 4 days, for Christmas last year and I'm just now getting the photos posted! Our destination was the village of Placencia on the tip of an 11 mile peninsula in southern coastal Belize. Far from the main international airport in Belize City, we had a tight connection to the village via a local puddle jumper. Unfortunately, we missed our flight getting through customs and the last connecting flight was cancelled at the last minute - it was running late and because the Placencia airstrip has no lights, would not be able make the trip after dark. So, there we were, Christmas Eve, stranded 30 miles outside of Belize city still 100 miles from our destination! Since we only had 3 more days to enjoy our trip, we decided we would try to get to Placencia by car that night. Unfortunately, the rental car shops were all closed, and the taxis were quickly disappearing home for the holiday! While getting our flight refunded at the ticket counter, we made the acquaintence of another couple headed for Placencia. With our numbers doubled, we negotiated with a local cabbie named Leo N. who was willing to take us to our destination that night, for about the same price as our flight when split between the four of us, and off we sped into the jungle. As we drove through the night, we passed the 2 1/2 hour trip amicably with our cab-mates, and even got into the holiday spirit singing Christmas carols on the way. Our cab driver seemed to like the free concert and even sang us a traditional holiday song from Belize! We finally arrived at our destination at around midnight on Christmas day, tired but with new friends and a great story to show for the delay. Later I realized you can rearrange "Leo N." to spell "NOEL"! :)

Christmas morning in Belize!

View from our room at the Maya Breeze Inn. A small B&B owned by a couple of expatriots from Oregon.

A carved parrot in our tropical-themed room.

Belikin beer - the official beer of Belize. It's quite good - a very light beer served with lime, similar to a Corona or Pacifio and perfect on a hot day!

Giant tropical palm. This was probably 20 feet tall!

Close-up of the above palm plant.

We walked to a neighboring resort the next day - much more luxurious than where we were staying. They welcomed us for the day and we had lunch and spent several hours by the pool!
